The basics

What Is eDPI and Why Does It Matter?

eDPI — effective dots per inch — is your mouse DPI multiplied by your in-game sensitivity. It collapses two numbers that mean nothing on their own into one that describes how fast your crosshair actually moves.

  • DPI alone tells you nothing — 3200 DPI at 0.1 sensitivity is slower than 800 DPI at 0.5, even though the first number is four times bigger.
  • eDPI is the number players share — when a pro lists 800 DPI and 0.35 sensitivity, the 280 eDPI is the part you can actually copy.
  • It only compares inside one game — 400 eDPI in Valorant and 400 eDPI in CS2 are completely different speeds, because each game turns a different amount per sensor count.
  • Your DPI has to be real — if your mouse reports 850 when you set 800, every eDPI you calculate is off by the same margin.

How to calculate eDPI by hand

The maths is deliberately simple. The only thing that trips people up is the format each game uses for its sensitivity value.

Find your true DPI

Read it from your mouse software, then confirm it with the DPI test. Manufacturer specs and real sensor output often differ by a few percent.

Read your in-game sensitivity

Use the raw number from the game's settings — not the Windows pointer slider, and not a scoped or ADS multiplier.

Multiply them

eDPI = DPI × sensitivity. 800 × 0.4 = 320. If your game shows a percentage, convert first: 7% becomes 0.07.

Convert to cm/360

Divide 360 by the game's yaw × sensitivity × DPI to get inches per turn, then multiply by 2.54. That number travels between games; eDPI does not.

Low, high, or somewhere in between?

There is no hidden advantage in a particular number. What changes is which movements are easy and which are awkward.

Lower eDPI

Fine adjustments land more easily and tracking is steadier, because hand tremor is scaled down along with everything else. The cost is desk space and repeated lifts during fast turns.

Higher eDPI

Quick 180s and close-range fights get easier, and you need almost no pad. In exchange, every twitch in your hand is amplified and long-range micro-adjustment gets harder.

How to change it

Move in steps of about 10% and stay there for a few sessions. Jumping between wildly different values resets the muscle memory you are trying to build.

Common mistakes

Why your eDPI might be wrong

Four things account for almost every mismatch between a calculated eDPI and how the game actually feels.

  • Comparing eDPI across games — the number is only meaningful within one title. Use the cm/360 in the table above when you move between games.
  • Windows pointer speed off centre — the slider scales cursor movement before the game sees it. Put it on the middle notch and turn off "Enhance pointer precision".
  • Using the advertised DPI — retail mice commonly deviate 1–15% from the number on the box. Test yours before trusting any calculation.
  • Mixing up ADS and hipfire sensitivity — most shooters apply a separate multiplier when you aim. eDPI describes hipfire unless you say otherwise.

What is eDPI?

Multiply DPI by sensitivity. 800 DPI at 0.4 in Valorant is 320 eDPI. Where the game shows a percentage, such as Fortnite, convert it to a decimal first — 7% at 800 DPI is 56 eDPI.

What is a good eDPI?

It depends entirely on the game's turn rate. Valorant sits around 180–400, CS2 around 600–1100, Apex around 1000–2000 and Overwatch 2 around 3000–6500. The reference table above lists the rest. Pick something inside the range and stay there long enough to build muscle memory.

Can I compare eDPI between different games?

No — each game rotates a different number of degrees per sensor count, so the same eDPI produces different speeds. Compare cm/360 instead, which this calculator shows next to your eDPI and converts for every supported game.

Is a lower eDPI better?

Not automatically. Lower eDPI helps micro-adjustment and tracking but demands desk space; higher eDPI turns faster but magnifies hand tremor. Most competitive players end up near the middle of their game's normal range.

What is cm/360?

The physical distance you move the mouse to spin exactly 360° in game. It means the same thing everywhere, which makes it the right number to carry between titles — or to check whether your setting even fits on your mousepad.

Should I change DPI or in-game sensitivity?

For aim speed only the product matters, so 800 DPI at 0.4 feels like 1600 DPI at 0.2. Practically, leave DPI at 800 or 1600 — well inside any modern sensor's native range — and fine-tune with the in-game value.

About the conversions:

cm/360 figures use each game's published turn constant and assume no mouse acceleration and a centred Windows pointer speed. Games that expose no reliable constant — Rainbow Six and PUBG among them — show eDPI only rather than a number we would have to guess at.
